  1. Early Summer Bulbs, by Stephen M. Lawson - April 1997 [text rev. 1/17/98]

  3. All of the icons for Early Summer Bulbs were obtained from the web site given below, volume 3 of 4 volumes of beautiful flowers now available. The flowers in volume 3 are shown below, together with the Japanese name, a comment by the artist, and the scientific name.

Also included in the Bulb file is an 8 pixel spacer, which permits you to thin out your flower garden. The best effect is obtained by placing the spacer at the top of each side, and left end of top and bottom. The spacer was created by modifying the larger spacers distributed by Tiger Technologies with Holiday Lights.

  7. Ten of the flowers were chosen for the screen saver resource.

  9. A music file is included - midi sound track from Apple's Mac OS 7.6 CD. The original included a photo tour of Japan on the CD at Mac OS 7.6/CD Extras/Movie Player Extras/PHOTOS.MOV (ｩ 1997 Apple Computer, Inc.).

  11. Place the music in the Music Files folder, and place Early Summer Bulbs in the Bulbs Files folder in the Holiday Lights folder.

  21. This is the third release of Flower Icons. I've picked up some flowers from ones  blooming in early summer days.  Most of them grow naturally in Japan.

  25. 1) SATSUKI. The name means "May", when it's in bloom.  Azarea indicum

  28. 2) YUKI-NO-SHITA. The name means "under snow". Its  leaves were used as medicine.  Saxifraga stoloniferaﾊ

  32. 3,4) AZISAI and 5) GAKU-AZISAI. They are symbol flowers of the Japanese rainy season.  Hydrangea/Pink, Blue and  Hydrangea macrofyllaﾊ

  35. 6) MATSUYOI-GUSA. Evening primrose.  Oenothera odrata

  38. 7) GIBOHSHI. The name means "an ornamental railing top".  Hosta undulata

  41. 8) KAZAGURUMA. The name means "a pinweel or a windmill". Clematis patens

  44. 9) KUGAI-SOH. The name means "a grass like a tower of nine stories" because it has layered verticillate leaves. Veronicastrum sibiric

  47. 10) SHIMOTSUKE. The old name of Tochigi prifecture, where it was discovered. Spiraea laponica

  50. 11) SHAKUYAKU. It comes from China in ancient times as a medicinal herb. Paeonia lactiflora

  53. 12) ICHIYAKU-SOH. The name means "a medicine grass". Pyrola japonica. Not used in Early Summer Bulbs file

  56. 13) MOMIZI-ICHIGO. The name means "tree berry having leaves like maple".  The jam tastes of marmalade!! Rubus palmatus

  59. 14) KAMOMIHRU. One of famous herbs which come from Europe. Matricaria chamomilla

  62. 15) GINRYOH-SOH. The name means "a silver dragon grass". Monotropastrum globos

  65. 16) YAMA-FUJI.  The name means "a mountain wisteria". Wisteria brachybotrys

  68. 17) TOKI-SOH. The name means "a ibis color grass". One of orchids growing in a bog. Pogonia japonica

  71. 18) UTSUBO-GUSA. The name means "a  grass with flowers like quivers". Prunella vulgaris

  74. 19) HOTARU-BUKURO. The name means "flowers like bags to catch fireflies". Campanula punctata

  77. 20) HAMANASU. The name means "sea shore pears". One of ancesters of garden roses. Rosa rugosa

  111. I've made these icons and calendars in order to decorate my power Macintosh desktop, because I couldn't find my favorite flower items for the desktop on web sites.
